WHAT IS SPORTS MEDICINE ACUPUNCTURE?

Sports Medicine Acupuncture is a in depth training taught to Licensed Acupuncturists. Which uses Motor Point Needling, Myofascial Release, Cupping Therapy, and Corrective Exercise. To correct the bodies imbalanced muscles, affect the nervous system, and heal injuries.

This type of treatment is a great choice for people suffering from chronic pain. Acute injuries, and prevention of injuries during season.

During treatment, orthopedic exams, manual muscle testing, and postural exams are all used to properly diagnose where pain is coming from and select the correct muscles and nerves to treat to properly correct muscle activation and posture.

DOES ACUPUNCTURE HURT?

Motor point needling is inserting needles into specific areas on the muscle where the muscle is most electric. Stimulating this area with a electric conducting material (the needle) will cause a jump/hop sensation. Some muscles it's a simple twitch, others feel more like a punch. Sometimes the bodies will perceive this as pain, but this is a not a trauma to the tissue.

Needles placed over areas close to the spine where the nervous system is closer in location often feel very heavy, like someone is sitting on you during treatment. While not pain, this also is a sensation often felt during acupuncture.

Fascial twitches are extremely common during acupuncture as muscles become active, start to give way, and posture starts to realign. During treatment it often feels like the sensation of little ants crawling from the increase blood flow to the area, and small twitches as the body starts to respond and react to the electric conducting needles.

Elite Sports Medicine style of needling is to leave the needles in 15-20 min, often treating both the back side and front side of the body to balance the muscle groups best. After 20 min, cupping is an option for those who want it, with CBD Level 5 (strongest) oil which provides excellent combo for pain relief. Myofascial release is used on area that need more work when needed (not done in all treatments), and corrective exercise is prescribed as needed.

WHY DOES CUPPING LEAVE MARKS?

In Chinese Medicine pain is often the result of stagnation or poor circulation that occurs from an injury or environmental factors such as being exposed to toxins often (like a firefighter). Cupping is a suction technique used to lift the skin, and allow for blood to flow over the fascia. This blood flow increase is what begins to heal muscles, and relieve pain. Cupping is used in Chinese Medicine for much more than injuries, such as opening the pores to treat common colds or fevers. Red/purple marks do not appear on everyone, and will go away within a few days.
